London Fashion Week

Well, it’s that time again. Somehow it always seems to be Fashion Week somewhere.

Fashion Week at Somerset House

This week it is the turn of London to show the latest autumn/winter collections, and I was fortunate enough to be there on the opening day of the shows, nosing around backstage and taking in the buzzing, charged atmosphere, courtesy of Luke Foy Productions.

Somerset House is the venue this time, and there truly isn’t a more spectacular setting. I arrived in time for the Bora Asku show, and was swiftly whisked backstage by one of the lovely production team.

The scene backstage is exactly as one would expect: Organised chaos. Models, hair and make up, production crew, press and assorted other people rushing around putting the final last minute touches to the show.

I had a moment to get a close look at the collection before it started, and I was thoroughly impressed. Delicate pinks and corals, lilacs and soft blues, in sheer fabrics nestled next to space aged silvers, coppers, and snake skin.

However, it was soon time to take a seat, as space along the runway is as valuable a commodity as gold. I slipped into my seat and took in the celebrities and fahionistas that constitute the first row, the mad hair and the inpenetrable  sunglasses, as the photographers jostled for position at the end of the catwalk.

The lights dimmed, and suddenly it was show time.

See the whole show here.

Backstage, I caught up with model Georgie Wass who opened the show. We chatted about her busy schedule, and, as she made her way to her next casting, she told me just how hectic and competitive Fashion Week can be.

“You’re constantly rushing from casting to casting, trying to fit in as much as possible between shows. This morning I went half way across London to a casting and I had to wait for an hour before I saw someone, only to be told that I they couldn’t book me as I had a conflicting show. That meant I missed other important castings. But you just never know. It’s all a mad balancing act and you just have to do your best.”

Georgie has since walked for PPQ and Mulberry and is off to castings in Milan for their Fashion Week.
